CMA staff just rescued a Loggerhead from North Clearwater Beach. The adult female is thought to have “cold stun” from the recent cold temperatures. With additional cold weather ahead, there could be more sea turtles in Pinellas County that wash up as a result of this condition. “Cold stun” happens when the temperature of the water drops below their normal body temperature. Their metabolic rate drops and they stop swimming and eating, and end up floating.
According to the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), over the past two days, 270 sea turtles have washed ashore in Florida due to “cold stun.” They have been found in Mosquito Lagoon and St. Joe’s Bay on the east coast of Florida. CMA is expected to receive six more critical sea turtles this afternoon.

The rehabilitation process for threatened and endangered species is expensive and CMA relies on public support to fulfill its mission. Any help from the public is much appreciated.

While walking the beach today we came across a greenback/loggerhead turtle lying washed up on shore apparently killed by a shark? The reason i though it might be of importance was that it had been marked with a spray of orange/red paint across its sheel…Location reddington beach midway between both piers.
