January 8 (5 p.m. update)

CMA just received six more critical Green sea turtles. The turtles were all rescued from the East Coast of Florida and have “cold stun” from the recent cold weather. Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) delivered eight sea turtles to CMA yesterday. This morning, CMA rescued a Loggerhead from North Clearwater Beach. Two Green turtles were found dead in Pinellas County this morning as a result of “cold stun.” With additional cold weather ahead, there could be more sea turtles in Pinellas County that wash up as a result of this condition.
Over the last two days, more than 270 sea turtles have washed up across the state with “cold stun.” This condition happens when the temperature of the water drops below their normal body temperature. Their metabolic rate drops and they stop swimming and eating, and end up floating.
The rehabilitation process for threatened and endangered species is expensive and CMA relies on public support to fulfill its mission. Any help from the public is much appreciated.
Our funds are rapidly depleting…please help now!
