The 2010 Sea Turtle Nesting season is underway. Our first nest was found on May 23rd on Treasure Island by Jackie Shum (pictured on the left), one of four nesting interns. As of July 7th, we have found 59 nests. In 2009, we had a total of 138 nests and helped over 10,000 hatchlings reach the water safely. It has been a bit of a slow start but things have been starting to pick up. We are running a little behind last year’s numbers but are staying optimistic. We do normally see a cyclic decline in nest numbers about every three years and in 2007 we only had 38 nests. As of this date in 2007 we only had 25 nests.
Do you know why sea turtles after laying their eggs and heading back into the ocean become disoriented and have a hard time finding the water?
