CLEARWATER, Fla. (August 11, 2010) – Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) earned the top state public relations award for media coverage resulting from its efforts to save 120 sea turtles during the “cold stun” event earlier this year. CMA won a total of five statewide public relations awards at the 2010 Golden Image Awards. The annual competition is sponsored by the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA).
CMA earned one of the competition’s biggest honors—a Grand Golden Image Award. Only three Grand Golden Image Awards are handed out each year and they are the top awards presented for public relations campaigns in the state. CMA also won two Golden Image Awards and two Judge’s Awards.
When thousands of sea turtles started washing up across the state of Florida with “cold stun,” CMA staff stepped up to help. Media coverage resulted in 176 stories with 7 million impressions. Stories showcased the heart of CMA’s mission to rescue, rehabilitate and release marine animals.
The competition recognizes companies that exhibit and employ comprehensive public relations projects that meet the highest standards of excellence in four components of PR programming: research, planning, execution and evaluation. A Golden Image Award is presented to the top-scoring entry in a respective category. A Judges’ Award is presented to an outstanding entry that achieves maximum results while using a minimum amount of money. Golden Image Award winners in each division are automatically considered for the Grand Golden Image Award, representing the finest examples of public relations programming in Florida.
The awards were presented in conjunction with FPRA’s 72nd annual conference, held in Naples. Over the past two years, CMA has won 21 local and state awards for public relations programs.
