Clearwater, FL (August 3, 2010) – As part of the coordinated response to the gulf oil spill, Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) received 6 juvenile Kemps Ridley Sea Turtles from the Louisiana coast on Wednesday afternoon. Kemps Ridley sea turtles are the most endangered of sea turtle species found in the Gulf of Mexico. These new arrivals have been de-oiled and are being evaluated at CMA and prepared for release. We are currently waiting for the bloodwork and then should be slotted for release soon! Five of the turtles were Kemps Ridley turtles which are the most endangered species found in the Gulf of Mexico! One of them was a Green Sea Turtle.
CMA opened a brand new sea turtle rehabilitation area in April of this year. The area, which houses nine turtle pools, can hold up to 20 sea turtles. The additional space will allow CMA to almost triple its current capacity for turtles and makes the Aquarium one of the largest sea turtle rehabilitation facilities in Florida and a perfect venue to provide care for de-oiled turtles. CMA turtle staff and volunteers are currently rehabilitating 17 sea turtles. This year alone, CMA staff and volunteers treated over 150 sea turtles.
